HEAL CREC is a grassroots Community Research and Empowerment Centre that studies the interconnected realities affecting young people and converts local evidence into practical opportunities, stronger support systems, better programs and evidence-informed public action.
Youth Challenges Are Connected. Solutions Should Be Connected Too.
HEAL CREC was inspired by the realities facing many young people, including unemployment and underemployment, financial pressure, prolonged idleness, mental-health difficulties, substance-use vulnerability, skills gaps and inadequate access to empowering environments.
We do not assume that these challenges exist independently. Community research allows us to examine how economic, social, psychological and institutional factors interact.
Our role is therefore not simply to launch more projects. It is to determine what young people need, what already exists, what prevents access, what remains missing and which response can produce meaningful opportunity.
Economic Exclusion
Unemployment and underemployment can restrict financial independence, confidence and longer-term opportunity.
Mental & Social Pressure
Economic and social strain may contribute to stress, hopelessness, isolation and other wellbeing challenges.
Substance-Use Vulnerability
Distress, limited opportunity and prolonged idleness can increase vulnerability to harmful coping behaviours.
Enabling Systems
Relevant skills, functioning public infrastructure, responsive policy and good leadership can interrupt the cycle.
Community Research Comes First.
Before deciding what intervention young people need, HEAL CREC seeks to understand the problem, the people affected, existing opportunities, barriers to access and the solutions communities themselves consider meaningful.
Evidence Before Intervention.
Community Research is the institutional backbone of HEAL CREC. It enables us to define challenges accurately, establish baselines, identify root causes and map available community, public and private resources.
Research also helps determine whether the appropriate response is a new program, stronger access to an existing opportunity, a referral pathway, institutional collaboration or evidence-informed policy action.

Young people should be able to translate learning into practical economic possibilities. HEAL CREC therefore seeks to use research on skills gaps, technology adoption and market demand to guide digital-skills programming.
This approach can support secondary-school leavers, tertiary students, graduates, unemployed youth and aspiring entrepreneurs who need practical capabilities for an increasingly digital and globally connected economy.
Where quality external learning opportunities already exist, HEAL CREC can help young people discover, access and apply them rather than unnecessarily recreating every learning resource locally.
Public Youth Infrastructure Should Work for Young People.
Kenya already has public infrastructure and programs intended to support youth development. HEAL CREC can help investigate how accessible, functional and relevant those resources are locally—and generate evidence about how they can serve young people more effectively.
Youth Empowerment Centres are especially important because a functioning centre can provide structured access to digital resources, information, entrepreneurship support, learning opportunities and productive youth engagement.
Mental Wellbeing Is Part of Youth Empowerment.
Economic empowerment cannot be separated from mental and social wellbeing. HEAL CREC seeks to investigate how unemployment, financial pressure, social circumstances, prolonged idleness and other experiences affect young people’s wellbeing.
HEAL CREC is not a substitute for qualified clinical providers. Its grassroots role is research, awareness, prevention, appropriate support, referrals and helping connect community needs with existing professional and public systems.

Individual empowerment is more sustainable when policies, institutions, public resources and leadership decisions also create an enabling environment.
